Field fire out, Forks fire rages on

SMARTSVILLE 6/11/02 (YSN) -- The fire that briefly threatened Smartsville in Yuba County is out, but it may take firefighters in Siskiyous County until Monday to corral the wildlands blaze raging around the Forks of the Salmon rivers, fire officials said Tuesday.
The "Field" fire in Yuba County was reported "100 percent contained" mid-day Tuesday, with crews already being released to go home or to other fires, California Department of Forestry Napa Battalion Chief David Shew said.
"We'll keep one or two engines on overnight and patrol tomorrow, but for all practical purposes the fire is virtually out," Shew said.
The size of the Field fire was reduced to 945 acres based on satellite mapping reports, but the estimated number of firefighters deployed in the fire rose to 595. Eighty-five pieces of equipment were used, including three helicopters.
Only one firefighter injury was reported and no homes or structures were damaged. The total cost of fighting the fire was about $447,000, Shew said.
The fire broke out about 1 a.m. Sunday morning when high winds pushed tree branches into power lines, fire investigators concluded.
Meanwhile, in Siskiyous County a 600-acre fire raged on in the Klamath National Forest about 75 miles southwest of Yreka. It was reported only 15 percent contained Tuesday, with full containment not expected until Monday morning, fire officials said.
Five hundred Northern California and southern Oregon firefighters, three helicopters, one air tanker, 20 engines and two bulldozers have been committed so far to the "Forks" fire, a spokesman for the Oregon California (ORCA) incident management team said.
"We've been fortunate to have had calm, clear weather over the last couple of days. It's given the firefighters good access to the fire," ORCA spokesman Tom Fields said.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fields said.
