GRASS VALLEY 6/10/02 (YSN) - Five-year-old Nicholas Marischal was killed about 11:30 a.m. Sunday when he fell under the wheels of a trailer transporting livestock at the Nevada County fairgrounds, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Monday.

The boy lost his footing while riding on the tongue connecting a 4,000-pound trailer to a pickup driven by Scott Mullen, 36, of Penn Valley, CHP Officer Troy Marks said.

The trailer was moving animals for the annual swine and sheep weigh-in for the county fair slated to open Aug. 7. Mullen apparently was unaware the boy was riding on the hitch, Marks said.

Marischal toppled as the pickup turned on a downhill grade on a dirt road and was run over by the trailer's dual wheels. He was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 12:30 p.m.

Nevada County Fair Chief Executive Officer Ed Scofield, a 20-year veteran of fair events, said this was the first accidental fatality he knew of to occur within the fairgrounds.
