Woman, 19, killed
in highway head-on
GRASS VALLEY 5/31/02 (YSN) -- Kara Stewart, 19, of Grass Valley was killed and another woman hospitalized in a head-on collision on Highway 49 just north of Quail Creek Road, authorities said Friday.
Stewart was southbound on Highway 49 about 9 p.m. Thursday when she drifted onto the right shoulder and over-corrected, sending her sub-compact sedan into the path of a northbound pickup operated by Dorothy Gippner.
Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene, but her name was withheld until Friday, pending notification of kin, a Nevada County Sheriff's Department spokesman said.
Gippner, whose age and residence were not immediately available, was airlifted to Sutter Hospital in Roseville where an official reported her in serious condition Friday.
