Storm report: A funnel thing happened
on the way through a heavy downpour

YUBA CITY, Calif. 5/20/02 (YSN) - Observers reported a tornado-like funnel touching down about 12:35 p.m. Monday in open field at the Yolo-Sutter county line near Knights Landing causing no damage, Sutter County Emergency Services Manager Mike Harold said.

The unusual weather event was the first in local memory Harold said. "We had a high-wind event they call a 'gust-onado' about four years ago, but that's the closest we've come to anything like this," Harold said.

Apart from a spectacular display of dark clouds, flashing lightning and heavy downpours, few significant weather-related events were reported as the freak storm cleaved a southwest-northeast line across Sutter and Yuba counties.

"Nothing out of the ordinary," Sutter County Undersheriff Bill Grove reported. No downed lines, emergency calls or service outages, Yuba County Assistant Sheriff Steve Durfor, said.

Outside workers were equally blasé. No one had called in about problems United Parcel Service counter clerk Mark Takacs said. "Except for some concerned housewives" who were worried about the drivers' safety - and their packages, Takacs said.

Whenever lightning strikes are being reported, Pacific Bell line installers stay in close touch via the call boxes at main telephone junctions.

"Things were pretty decent," PacBell installer Greg Baker of Yuba City said just after speaking with a fellow intaller working in the Dobbins area.
