MARYSVILLE 6/9/02 (YSN) - A driver involved in a fatal Highway 70 collision remained in critical condition at a Roseville hospital Sunday as authorities continued to try to notify the next of kin of a passenger instantly killed in the accident.

Christopher L. Philpott, 19, of Yuba City was injured about 4 a.m. Friday when his Honda sedan rear-ended a tractor hauling a bin of dried prunes in the District 10 farming area just north of Marysville, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

Philpott was airlifted to the Roseville Sutter Hospital where a spokeswoman listed him in critical condition Sunday.

A 21-year-old male passenger from Yuba City killed upon impact, CHP reports said.

The victim's identity was still being withheld pending notification next of kin, a Yuba County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Sunday.

According to CHP reports, Philpott was southbound on Highway 70 near Woodruff Lane when a tractor-trailer operated by Manuel J. Mendoza, 46, of Marysville entered the roadway from a drier facility and the two vehicles collided.
