MARYSVILLE 6/11/02 (YSN) - Drugs may have been a factor in the Highway 70 traffic collision that last week killed Steven Thein, 21, of Yuba City, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Thein was a passenger in a Honda sedan driven by Christopher L. Philpott when it rear-ended a tractor-trailer pulling a sea cargo container loaded with 42,000 pounds of prunes about 4 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol Officer Frank Gaither said.

Philpott, 19, also of Yuba City, was airlifted from the scene near Woodruff Lane to the Sutter Hospital in Roseville where his condition was upgraded to "fair" Tuesday.

The accident is still under investigation, but preliminary conclusions indicated there was reason to believe Philpott may have been under the influence of drugs at the time, Gaither said.

"We're actively pursuing the possibility drugs were a factor," he said.
