YUBA CITY 8/30/02 (YSN) - Two traffic tragedies claimed the lives of three people in the Yuba-Sutter area, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.
In the Yuba County foothills 10-year-old Michael Brick of Challenge was killed about 2:30 p.m. Thursday when his bicycle collided with a travel trailer on La Porte Road, the CHP reported.
Brick was pedaling his bike westward on the southbound shoulder of La Porte Road just east of Musolt Road when he turned right into the eastbound lane and the path of a pickup pulling a travel trailer, reports stated.
Pickup driver Robert Thomas, 56, of Yuba City swerved to avoid a collision, but when the bike struck the front of the travel trailer the boy fell off and under the trailer's wheels.
Young Brick was dragged approximately 100 feet. A Yuba County deputy coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
In Sutter County two men were killed about 9 p.m. Thursday when their 1984 BMW sedan rear-ended a nut harvester on Eager Road west of Yuba City, an accident report stated.
Jagat S. Holait, 74, and Malkiat S. Hunjan, 69, both of Yuba City were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the John Deere tree shaker, Santokh Dosanjh, 35, of Live Oak, was not injured, the CHP reported.
Escorted by a following vehicle with all safety lights displayed, the shaker was traveling eastbound on Eager Road just west of Highway 99 at less than 20 miles per hour when the white BMW approached from behind at a high rate of speed, CHP reports stated.
The BMW passed the escort vehicle but then zipped back into the eastbound lane only to slam into the harvester, witnesses told the CHP.
These deaths bring to eight the number of traffic fatalities recorded in the bi-county area in the last two weeks.
