YUBA CITY 8/20/02 (YSN) - Sutter High School senior Tonya Olivia McClung, 17, was killed on her way to the first day of school when she lost control of her car and struck a power pole, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.
The Monday accident plunged her classmates at the 700-student school into shock and grief counselors from several local agencies hurried to the campus to calm students, Sutter High Superintendent Ryan Robison (cq) said.
McClung, a Yuba City resident, was traveling westbound on Butte House Road at an estimated 70 miles per hour at 7:45 a.m. Monday when she apparently drifted onto the gravel shoulder on the north side of the road, the CHP reported.
Her attempts to regain control of the swerving Saturn sedan failed and she struck a Pacific Gas and Electric pole, knocking out power to more that 570 home, according to CHP reports. Service was restored about 1 p.m. Monday, a PG&E spokesman said.
The high school psychologist, counselors from the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office, the sheriff's department and volunteer trauma advisory groups were campus Monday and Tuesday talking to students. More will be provided in the future "an as needed basis," Robison said.
There have been tragic traffic accidents involving Sutter High School students in the past, "but none on the first day," Robison said.
"We talked to them at an assembly at the end of the day about traffic accidents and how life can be here one minute and gone the next. We tried to tell them how every day is precious," Robison said.
