MARYSVILLE (YSN) 8/5/02 -- Wal-mart has signed a deal to build a new store in Linda, making it the first major retail business to enter Yuba County since the 1986 flood, it was announced Monday.
The 180,000-square-foot store would be sited on a 23-acre parcel on North Beale Road, diagonally across the street from the Peach Tree Mall, which was devastated in the '86 flood, Yuba County Supervisor-elect Dan Logue said.
Logue, who said he was also the real estate agent in the sale, pegged the purchase and construction cost of the Wal-mart project at $15 million.
"It's not a superstore, but it's big," Logue said.
The new Wal-mart is expected to generate about $500,000 in annual sales tax revenues for Yuba County, Logue said.
"It's the most important deal for Yuba County in 15 years," Logue said.
Wal-mart has already secured all the permits needed to begin construction of the store, and groundbreaking for the store is scheduled for April 2003," Logue said.
An existing building at the site - a former "PV" ranch supply store - will be razed to make room for the incoming Wal-mart.
The store will be situated close to the south end of the E Street bridge where traffic from Highway 70 and commuters from Beale Air Force Base and East Linda converge to enter Marysville.
County workers leaving government offices at the Peach Tree Mall also contribute to periods of heavy traffic during the day.
An additional red light is expected to be installed to help control the increased traffic, Logue said.
Details regarding the seller were not immediately disclosed.
