HALLWOOD (8/13/02 (YSN) -- Lannette Burbank, 34, of Brownsville was killed and two others injured in a five-vehicle chain reaction pile-up that closed Highway 20 for almost six hours Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Also injured were tanker truck driver Eric Rasmussen, 44, of Sacramento, and Brian T. Smeaton, also 44, of Brownsville, who was driving a sports utility vehicle at the time of the accident.
Both Rasmussen and Smeaton sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken to Rideout Emergency in Marysville. A Rideout spokeswoman indicated Monday that both men had been treated and released.
According to CHP reports, Burbank was eastbound on Highway 20 about 3:15 p.m. when she entered the small settlement of Hallwood eight miles east of Marysville where - "for reasons yet to be determined" - she was unable to slow in time for congested traffic.
Burbank was then rear-ended by a following pickup, which pushed her into the path of Rasmussen's on-coming westbound tanker hauling aluminum sulfate, a hazardous material. Burbank was killed instantly, the CHP reported.
The impact pushed Burbank's vehicle backwards into a van. Rasmussen's tanker continued forward, striking Smeaton's vehicle before tipping over, CHP reports said.
Rasmussen's overturned tanker remained intact. No hazardous material was leaked. Nonetheless, cleanup of the accident scene shut Highway 20 down in both directions for five hours and 40 minutes, the CHP reported.
