MARYSVILLE 8/29/02 (YSN) - A 20-year-old Sacramento man killed in a head-on collision on Highway 70 was the fifth traffic fatality recorded in Yuba-Sutter in the last two weeks, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday.

"We're in a very bad cycle," CHP Officer Frank Gaither said.

Joshua John Sutton was traveling southbound in a 1987 Chevrolet Capri about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when he attempted to pass another sedan just south of where Plumas-Arboga Road meets the state highway.

When Sutton moved into the northbound lane to pass he struck a Freightliner big rig hauling 50,000 pounds of pears and was instantly killed, Gaither said.

The rig overturned, spilled pears all over the road and burst into flames, the CHP reported.

Truck driver Ubaldo Villagas, 35, of Gridley escaped with a broken leg. He was admitted to Fremont Hospital in Yuba City where he was reported in good condition Thursday.

Highway 70 was closed in both directions for five hours, forcing traffic to be detour along Plumas-Arboga Road, Gaither said.

The driver of the vehicle Sutton was attempting to pass estimated Sutton was going about 80 miles an hour at the time of the collision and speed was considered a factor in the crash, Gaither said.
