FORKS OF THE SALMON 6/12/02 (YSN) -- The 700-plus acre fire blazing around this tiny Klamath National Forest hamlet has been 25 percent contained, fire officials said Wednesday.

Full containment was expected by Sunday, said Don Jensen, US Forestry Service information officer.

Six hundred California and Oregon firefighters, 17 engines, five helicopters, two air tankers and two bulldozers have been deployed.

Four homes were under 24-hour protection, and the estimated cost of fighting the fire so far was $250,000, Jensen said.

Temperatures hovering in the upper 90's and steep terrain slowed firefighters, but forecasters say thermometers will soon dip, Jensen said.

"Right now, though, the fire is burning actively. You can look out and see 40-foot flames leaping on the hillsides, Jensen said from a command post in the middle of town.

The village, which has no electricity and only 20 residents, was in no immediate danger, Jensen said, but a community briefing was planned for Wednesday night.
