YUBA CITY 10/5/02 (YSN) - Two men have pleaded not guilty in Sutter County Superior Court to manslaughter charges stemming from a Feb. 27 traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Linda boy.

Steven W. Lynn, 35, ad Ryan D. Dant, 18, entered the pleas Thursday. Judge H. Ted Hansen scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 25.

The two are accused of engaging in a reckless speed contest across the 10th Street Bridge linking Marysville and Yuba City that led to the death of Matthew J. Hayes.

About 9 p.m. that night Dant in a van reportedly pursued Lynn on motorcycle west over the bridge at speeds Yuba City police investigators estimated reached 85 miles per hour.

As the two came down the incline on the Yuba City side of the bridge, Dant lost control of the van, hit a guard rail and struck Lynn's Suzuki motorcycle, knocking it over. The van then left the roadway and collided with a tree, reports indicated.

Hayes, a passenger in Dant's van, was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. Dant received serious head injuries.

The two men surrendered to authorities Wednesday after being notified a warrant had been issued for their arrest. After their arraignment, the judge released both on their own recognizance, pending the preliminary hearing.
