to drape its business

MARYSVILLE 10/1/02 (YSN) -- Although it has operated without a flag since it incorporated in 1850, Yuba County is now holding a contest to design one.
Dubbed "Run it Up the Flagpole," the contest opened Tuesday. The winning design will be announced Nov. 25 by the Yuba County Board of Supervisors, county economic development coordinator John Fleming said.
Officials decided the county needed a county flag after Forbes Magazine ranked the Marysville-Yuba City metropolitan area as one of the nation's most business-friendly localities, Fleming said.
The winner will be selected based on five criteria: simplicity; readability and distinctiveness; appropriate use of symbols related to the county's past, present or future; effective use of color; and best overall appearance.
Artwork must be original and should not exceed 8 inches by 10 inches. Contestants should provide judges with a written interpretation of their design.
Entry forms are available at the Yuba County Library in Marysville or online at www.yubacounty.org. Click on "Run it Up the Flagpole" to download the form.
Entries should be mailed to: "Run it Up the Flagpole" Contest; Yuba County Airport and Office of Economic Development; 1364 Sky Harbor Drive, Marysville, Calif., 95901.
Members of the judging committee, include Yuba County Supervisor Al Amaro, Marysville Mayor Dirk Helder, Wheatland Mayor Roy Crabtree, and Yuba College President and Superintendent Nikki Harrington.
The committee's 25 favorites will be turned over to the board of supervisors, which will make the final choice.
Only one flag will become the county's official banner, but awards and some cash prizes will given to contestants in different groups, including junior and senior high school students, college students and members of the general community.
