First of 3 teens arraigned
on Ecstasy case perjury
YUBA CITY(2/19/03) --Brian Nicolas Skousen, 18, has pleaded innocent to charges he perjured himself to a grand jury looking into the death Nicole A. Crowder, court records show.
The court Tuesday set a preliminary hearing into the felony charge for 1:30 p.m. March 19.
Skousen is one of three teenagers the Sutter County District Attorney has charged with perjury before a grand jury probing Crowder's drug-related death April 27, 2002.
Yousef Nassiri and Frank D. Soucek Jr., both 18, have also been accused of perjury in the same connection. They are scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
Forensic experts concluded Crowder died from ingesting the drug "Ecstasy," a designer drug she allegedly received at a barbecue at the Yuba City home of Tomio A. Izumi, 19.
Now an engineering student at Chico State University, Izumi has since pleaded no contest to felony counts of maintaining a house where drugs were furnished and child endangerment. He is to be sentenced March 20.
Izumi was never charged with being directly responsible for the 17-year-old Crowder's.
The popular teen's death shocked the community and the grand jury looking into her demise subpoenaed more than a score of people who attended the party.
The grand jury granted immunity to many of the teen witnesses, but was unable to establish exactly when or how Crowder came to ingest the drugs, or who gave them to her, court papers indicated.
