YUBA CITY (2/16/03) -- A 36-year-old temple musician man has been arrested on suspicion of killing an acquaintance during an argument, authorities reported Sunday.
Lakhwinder Singh was arrested shortly after noon Saturday on an open count of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Prabjot Bains, 28. Both men were of Yuba City, Sheriff's Captain Malkit S. Johl said.
Passersby saw the two men struggling a vehicle stopped in he 1900 block of Franklin Road just east of Harding Road in the western section of town, crime reports stated,
As one of the witnesses tried to separate the two, Singh allegedly drew a weapon and shot Bains, Johl said.
A bystander -- described as "a male citizen" -- then disarmed Singh and held him until deputies arrived, Johl said.
Bains was transported to Rideout Emergency in Marysville where he was pronounced dead.
The two citizens "are to be commended for their valiant efforts in assisting law enforcement during this dangerous situation," Johl said in a prepared statement.
The suspect is said to be a musician who sometimes performed at the Sikh temple on Tierra Buena Road. He and Bains apparently knew each other.
Singh is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Sutter County Superior Court.
