Wild arrest, man booked for attempted murder, kidnap

YUBA CITY (3/14/03) -- A 19-year-old Marysville man was arrested early Friday on charges of kidnap, attempted murder and assorted other charges stemming from a wild melee with police.

Jeremy L. Copenhafer was taken into custody about 2 a.m. after battling with police investigating a report that a woman had been kidnapped, a police spokesman reported.

According to Yuba City police reports, officers were contacted by an unnamed woman who reported a girlfriend had been abducted and was being held against her will at an apartment in the 1500 block of Bridge Street, police Lieutenant Bill Ollar reported.

As officers raced to the scene, dispatchers received a 9-1-1 hang-up from the same apartment mentioned by the female witness, Ollar recounted.

When officers arrived in the apartment complex parking lot they found Copenhafer along with the alleged victim, a 42-year-old female.

On seeing the police, Copenhafer pushed the victim from her driver’s seat and slid behind the wheel, police reported.

He then backed the car up at a high rate of speed, hitting a parked car and ramming it into a second car.

Copenhafer ignored officers' orders to get out of the car and accelerated forward, directly at one of the officers.

Handgun drawn the officer ordered Copenhafer to halt but the suspect kept accelerating towards the officer, forcing him to leap out of the vehicle's path, Ollar reported.

Copenhafer then reportedly made for a closed exit gate, but was traveling too fast for the gate to open, He then crashed the gate and into an adjoining wall. The violent impact caused the car’s air bag to deploy.

The suspect still refused to get out of the car, and officers had to break the driver’s side window to pull him out, Ollar said.

Officers handcuffed Copenhafer behind his back, but her remained combative. While detained, he managed to slip the handcuffs to the front, and continued to struggle.

Officers then targeted him with a taser gun, but, despite the electrical impact, the suspect yanked the wires from his body and then pulled away from the officers.

A foot pursuit began as the determined suspect ran towards Walton Avenue. The officers were able to run him down after a couple of hundred years, Ollar reported.

The suspect was taken to Rideout Emergency Center in Marysville where he received several stitches in his arms and knees for glass cuts sustained when being pulled through the car window and during the melee.

The 42-year-old female victim told police the suspect had "tried to drown her in a sink and had at one point choked her into unconsciousness during the struggle," according to police reports.

After being treated for his injuries, Copenhafer was booked into the Sutter county jail on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping, domestic violence, carjacking, threatening an executive officer, criminal threats, hit and run, resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.

He is being held on $500,00o bail for the attempted murder charge, and on no bail for an outstanding warrant for violation of probation, a jail spokesman said.

He his expected to be arraigned in Sutter County Superior Court 3 p.m. Tuesday, the jail spokesman said.
