Body a mystery,
but suspect held
MARYSVILLE (5/6/03) -- Francisco Garcia Maldonado, 48, of Marysville was in custody as Yuba County investigators sought the identity of an Asian man he is suspected of killing, officials said Tuesday.
Maldonado was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Monday and booked in to the Yuba County jail on an open count of homicide, as investigators reconstructed events leading to the discovery of a dead body on Doc Adams Road, Undersheriff Steve Durfor said.
A resident of the 7300 block of Doc Adams stepped out his front door about 6 a.m. Monday only to find a complete stranger lying dead on his front lawn, Durfor said.
Neighbors told deputies they had heard "gunshot-type sounds" in the wee hours of the night, Durfor said.
Sheriff's investigators and agents of the state Department of Justice gathered evidence indicating the shooting might have occurred nearby in front of Maldonado's home in the 400 block of South Roberta Way, Durfor said.
Maldonado and other family members were questioned at the Yuba County Sheriff's Office, during which time Maldonado allegedly made incriminating admissions to his interrogators, Durfor said.
According to investigators, Maldonado allegedly fired a shotgun hitting the victim in the chest and neck. The wounded Asian then fled about 200 yards before he collapsed and died.
The motive for the shooting and the identity of the victim remain pending, with Maldonado being held without bail, Durfor said.
