Richman pre-trial hearing delayed
MARYSVILLE (3/26/03) -- A Yuba County judge Wednesday continued a pre-trial hearing for physician Michael F. Richman until 1:30 p.m. April 23.
The 36-yearold heart surgeon has pleaded not guilty to charges of being under the influence of cocaine and vandalism.
Defense attorney Donald Wahlberg had asked Superior Court Judge Kathleen O'Connor for time to obtain information relating to a state medical board drug diversion program. Richman was not present in court.
Richman was arrested Jan. 6 by Yuba County deputies responding to Richman's report of trespassers on his Loma Rica home property. Richman had exhibited "hallucinatory tendencies" when they arrived o investigate reports of a prowler, deputies said.
The vandalism charge stemmed from Richman allegedly kicking out a window on a patrol vehicle while being taken into custody.
Richman was the only board certified cardiothoracic surgeon associated with The Heart Center at Rideout Hospital in Marysville.
Fremont-Rideout Health Group officials subsequently suspended Richman from duty and postponed or diverted his scheduled surgeries to other doctors.
Richman repportedly admitted himself to the Betty Ford Center in Palm Desert.
