Yuba County seeks
a flag to rally under

MARYSVILLE 10/1/02 -- Although it has operated without a flag since it incorporated in 1850, Yuba County is now holding a contest to design one.

Dubbed "Run it Up the Flagpole," the contest opened Tuesday. The winning design will be announced Nov. 25 by the Yuba County Board of Supervisors, county economic development coordinator John Fleming said.

Officials decided the county needed a county flag after Forbes Magazine ranked the Marysville-Yuba City metropolitan area as one of the nation's most business-friendly localities, Fleming said.

The winner will be selected based on five criteria: simplicity; readability and distinctiveness; appropriate use of symbols related to the county's past, present or future; effective use of color; and best overall appearance.

Contestants must be Yuba County residents. Artwork must be original and should not exceed 8 inches by 10 inches.

Entry forms are available at the Yuba County Library in Marysville or online at www.yubacounty.org. Click on "Run it Up the Flagpole" to download the form, Fleming said.

Completed designs must be received by Nov. 15. Address them to "Run it Up the Flagpole" Contest; Yuba County Airport and Office of Economic Development; 1364 Sky Harbor Drive, Marysville, Calif., 95901.

An 11-member "celebrity judging committee" composed primarily of local officials will turn over its 25 favorites to the board of supervisors, which will then make the final choice.

Only one flag will become the county's official banner, but awards and some cash prizes will given to contestants in two groups: students in the seventh through 12th grades and a category Fleming called "college/community."
